There is a hole in the center of each end plate, with a shaft in the middle. The shaft comes in two types: one is a single through (full-length) shaft, and the other is a short-shaft type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on whether the shaft rotates, drums are divided into the rotating-shaft type and the fixed-shaft type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the number of rope winding layers, drums are divided into single-layer winding and multi-layer winding. Overhead cranes mostly use single-layer winding drums. The drum surface is usually cut with helical grooves to increase the contact area with the wire rope, keep the wire rope arranged neatly, and prevent adjacent wire ropes from rubbing against each other, thereby increasing the service life of the wire rope. The rope grooves are divided into standard grooves and deep grooves. They are often made as smooth drums without helical grooves, so that the wire rope can be arranged closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commonly used drum assembly types include the gear connection disc type and the drum coupling type. The gear connection disc type can be divided into the short-shaft type and the long-shaft type, while the drum coupling connection is generally the short-shaft type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on different conditions or requirements, cast drums or steel plate drums are used. A rope clamp for fixing the wire rope is provided on the drum. Generally, the drum support carries the sensor of the overload limiter, and the lifting height limiter is driven by the drum output shaft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the load-handling device rises to the set limit height, one empty groove of wire rope should be left on the drum; when the load-handling device descends to the set lower limit position, in addition to the turns for fixing the wire rope, at least two turns should be retained on the drum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1856\" height=\"1238\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hndfcrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/overhead-crane-drum-and-limit-switches.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hndfcrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/overhead-crane-drum-and-limit-switches.png 1856w, https:\/\/www.hndfcrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/overhead-crane-drum-and-limit-switches-1536x1025.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1856px) 100vw, 1856px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"overhead-crane-drum-and-reducer-connection-forms\">Overhead Crane Drum and Reducer Connection Forms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1. The overhead crane drum can be connected to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hndfcrane.com\/es\/overhead-crane-reducers\/\">overhead crane reducer<\/a> using a gear connection disc, or using a drum coupling. In Fig. 2-19, the splined output shaft of the reducer drives the drum through a WZL-type spherical hinge drum coupling. In Fig. 2-20, the toothed output shaft of the reducer drives the drum through a gear connection disc (internal gear ring). Depending on the reducer output shaft, the drum adopts the corresponding connection method. In Fig. 2-21, Fig. 2-22, and Fig. 2-23, the reducers all use the connection method of a hollow output shaft with three-point mounting. The long-shaft type of the gear connection disc drum shaft is an enclosed transmission with good component grouping; the drum shaft does not bear torque. Its disadvantage is that the drum must be moved axially outward for maintenance. The drum body material is commonly HT200 or Q235-B, Q355-B. HT200 is not recommended at present. Because the gear connection disc has requirements for gear hardness, the tooth surface heat-treatment hardness is required to be HRC 30\u201340, and the common material is ZG340-640. When the quantity is small, steel can be used, but if the tooth surface hardness cannot meet the requirement, it is easy to wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. The gear connection disc type adopts the short-shaft type, which can use separate short shafts instead of a single long drum shaft. Its advantage is simple construction and convenient adjustment and installation. Depending on the situation, the material can be Q235-B or Q355-B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. For overhead crane drum and coupling connections, three types of couplings are commonly used at present: the WJ series spherical roller drum coupling, the WZL-type spherical hinge drum coupling, and the DC series crowned gear drum coupling. Depending on the situation, the drum body material can be Q235-B or Q355-B.
