Siberian winters are no joke. Last year, a leading Russian railway infrastructure company approached us; they needed a 10-ton gantry crane for their open-air prefabrication yard to handle concrete sleepers and bridge segments. While the requirement sounded routine, they included a specification that caused many other suppliers to walk away immediately: the equipment had to operate year-round in extreme cold—specifically, at temperatures as low as -40°C.

Meeting Client Needs: A Gantry Crane Engineered for Siberian Winters

The client is a long-established enterprise in the Russian railway construction sector, operating large-scale prefabrication yards in Siberia that specialize in producing concrete sleepers and bridge segments. They required a 10-ton gantry crane capable of stable outdoor operation in extreme cold.

Specifically, temperatures as low as -40°C, to handle heavy precast components; standard equipment would be highly susceptible to cold-brittle steel fractures and electrical system failures due to freezing. DAFANGCRANE technical team responded swiftly with a customized solution designed for extreme cold environments, integrating Q355E low-temperature steel, intelligent temperature-controlled electrical cabinets, and an innovative split-main-girder design. Leveraging robust supply chain management, the production cycle was efficiently set at 3–4 weeks, and the entire process from initial inquiry to contract signing took just 25 days. Currently, the customized MH 10t gantry crane is operating reliably and continuously on-site in Russia.

Supported by DAFANGCRANE’s comprehensive after-sales service. Including remote commissioning with a 24-hour response time and real-time online expert guidance during installation, the crane has perfectly ensured the project stays on schedule.

Four Hardcore Crane Customizations: Engineered Specially for -40°C

To address the project’s unique operating conditions, DAFANGCRANE engineers eschewed conventional, off-the-shelf components; instead, they implemented four targeted technical upgrades to precisely meet the client’s procurement requirements:

1.Preventing Steel Cold Embrittlement and Structural Cracking at -40°C

Ordinary carbon steel loses its ductility at -40°C. During the frequent lifting of heavy precast concrete components, it is highly susceptible to developing micro-cracks or even suffering sudden fracture due to impact loads. Posing the greatest safety risk for gantry crane operations in extremely cold regions. DAFANGCRANE has upgraded all core load-bearing structural components. Such as main girders and support legs—to Q355E steel plate, a material characterized by superior low-temperature impact toughness. This steel undergoes rigorous impact testing at -40°C, ensuring it retains excellent elasticity and fatigue strength even under extreme cold and heavy loads. Furthermore, critical load-bearing welds can undergo Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) with documented results upon project request, thereby eliminating the risk of cold-brittle fracture at the material source.

The image shows the Dafang production workshop, where high-precision box-girder assembly and internal welding of core components are underway for Q355E low-temperature steel plates destined for a Russian project. Given the stringent requirements for internal structural stress in low-temperature cranes, DAFANGCRANE engineers have conducted internal nondestructive testing (NDT) on every critical load-bearing weld shown. This ensures the steel structure is free of potential defects—such as microscopic porosity or cracks—under extreme cold (-40°C) and heavy loads.

2. Preventing Electrical Freezing and Moisture Short Circuits in Extreme Cold

In outdoor temperatures plunging tens of degrees below zero, components inside standard electrical cabinets struggle to function; the mere formation of frost, caused by the drastic temperature differential between the cabinet’s interior and exterior can trigger short circuits and burnouts during operation. We implemented comprehensive thermal protection for the gantry crane’s electrical cabinets: custom-installed industrial-grade space heaters with smart thermostats automatically activate or deactivate based on ambient conditions, keeping the internal temperature consistently above the dew point. This eliminates condensation and icing at the source, ensuring that core electronic components.

Such as PLCs and relays—no longer suffer from logic errors or “freeze-up” failures caused by the cold. Furthermore, all exposed, moving cables have been upgraded to specialized low-temperature-resistant materials. The cable sheaths incorporate special plasticizers, preventing the outer casing from cracking or flaking even when subjected to repeated flexing during high winds and freezing temperatures.

3. Meeting Corporate Branding Requirements With Custom Coating

Client Requirements: The client maintains highly strict standards for corporate branding. They specified that the crane exterior must feature a high-durability coating in RAL 6038 Luminous Green. It also had to display their official grey corporate logo perfectly.

DAFANGCRANE Solutions: We utilized specialized outdoor anti-corrosion paint during the final coating layer. This material offers excellent UV resistance and anti-cracking properties in extreme cold. We mixed and applied the paint in strict compliance with the RAL 6038 standard. The bright luminous green body contrasts sharply with the grey logo. This delivers excellent long-term weatherproofing. It also transforms the crane into a highly visible mobile billboard for the client in the snowy Siberian landscape.

4. Secure Cross-Border Packaging: Ensuring Safe Crane Delivery

International transit covers long distances and involves numerous components. Moisture or impacts during transit will delay the project schedule. The DAFANGCRANE logistics team implemented a secure packaging strategy:

  • All precise components and electrical elements were packed into independent, heavy-duty wooden boxes. These crates provide waterproof, rust-proof, and shockproof protection.
  • Large steel structures were wrapped in specialized anti-freeze protective foam blankets. This protects the finish coating from friction and moisture over long-distance transport.

After the cargo arrived in Russia, the client hired a local third-party installation company. To help the local team get started smoothly, we prepared bilingual Chinese-Russian electrical schematics in advance. During the installation phase, our technical team provided real-time guidance via high-definition video calls. We crossed time zones to support their debugging for several hours until the entire crane successfully passed inspection.
